Throughout the season, Finley Payne has been an offensive machine, scoring more than 50 goals and leading the Hampton Road area in scoring.

When Friday set the tone for the state semifinal against Stafford, she spoke again.

After Payne found the net in a heavy hit, the First Colony jumped onto Stafford early on the way to a 5-2 victory on the Sposhwaniya High School's court.

"This is really a team effort," Payne said after the game. "All my goals are not one person, but my team."

On Saturday, First Colonial will play against Cox at Courtland High at 2 pm for the championship.

The last time the Patriots participated in the state championship was in 2018, when they lost to Cox in the double overtime in the final. They are a young team. Only one player, Emily Tammaro, played in the state level before the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

"Others (players) have never participated in such a high-pressure game. I think they handled it very well," FC coach Bini Schleicher said. "They know that because of the history of First Colonial and the culture we have established, even at the beginning of the season, they are under a lot of pressure."

The Patriots scored two goals in the first five minutes, leaving the shocked Indians close behind. Stafford (22-1) entered the duel undefeated, regrouped, reduced the score to 2-1, and then reduced the score to 3-2 after the first colony scored again.

In the first half, Claire Hitchens and Julie Day also scored for the Patriots, leading 3-2 after two quarters, while Olivia Stokes and Marty Frow were the Indians The team scored.

After the intermission, the Patriots once again dominated, because the team's only senior, Tamaro scored a blow. Landry Meyer scored the fifth goal for First Colonial, the same total number of goals Stafford allowed in the previous 22 games in a game.

Schleicher said that although the Indians have had a firm defense throughout the season, the Patriots "have confidence in our offense." "We watched some movies about their games and thought we could score a lot."

Entering the state championship game on Saturday, the Patriots will be full of momentum not only this year but also in the years to come.

"In my freshman and sophomore years, we were unsuccessful (to participate in the state championship), so I think it’s very special for us to be here with such a young team. There is only one senior. ," Payne said. "It allows us to have this experience (again) next year and know what it is like."

Official news: Cox and the First Colony will once again face national glory.

Sophia Birch and Megan Spear both scored goals in their fourth consecutive championship promotion for the Falcons (19-0).

The Falcons have faced the First Colony twice this season, beating them 2-0 in the regular season and 3-0 in the Division 5 Championship.

In the game against Northern Virginia's Independence team, Cox took the lead in the opening minutes, and sophomore Burch found the Nets.

Birch said: "We want to show (strong) in the first two minutes, so this is our goal, we did it, and we executed it well."

After entering the game, Cox and the Independence team only conceded three goals throughout the season. Falcons goalkeeper Abbey Spear made several big saves, including a back-to-back stop at the Independent Corner midway through the second quarter, and Cox still led 1-0.

"Of course we are looking forward to a great game. They are obviously a great team because they are in the states," Cox coach Tyler Langtry said.

Throughout the game, the Tigers struggled to move the ball while defending against Cox in the middle of the game, and they had very few opportunities. In contrast, Cox controlled the ball and had many scoring opportunities, even though the scoreboard did not show it.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Falcons attacked again early in the third quarter, with Megan Spear shooting on the defensive end and entering the net.

With Cox and the first colony approaching the third round, Langtry is happy to once again prove that Virginia Beach hockey dominates the state championship.

"We are definitely playing different games on different venues at different venues, but positively, this is expected to show that the beach is in the best condition."

Xico had tasted failure on this stage before. In 2019, the Bruins lost in the semifinals, just one step away from the team's first appearance in the state championship.

When the Bruins got another chance to enter the championship game, they didn't waste it.

Addison Bosco and Josie John both scored second-half goals, allowing the Western Branch (18-3) to win on the Spotsylvania court on Friday. At 4 pm on Saturday, the Bruins will play the final at Courtland High School against Yorktown, Northern Virginia.

"It means a lot," said Western Detachment coach Erica Rimas. "These girls are very excited now. We can't even believe (how far we have come). They have worked very hard throughout the season and we have experienced some ups and downs, but now we really want to win the game."

Fairfax (24-1) entered the duel unbeaten. For most of the game, the two teams remained deadlocked, and the defenses of both sides were firmly established.

Halfway through the third quarter, Bruins finally broke through, because Bosco found the net behind a penalty corner. Late in the fourth quarter, John used another goal to help the West Division secure the victory.

Entering the championship stage, Rimasse knew that for her players to reach higher heights, they needed to go further.

"We are looking for everyone to go all out, 110%," she said. "You don't have to walk, you just need to play double-handed, offensive and defensive, and wise decisions."

With the Grizzlies losing to York City, Glassfield's dream season is over.

Kyleigh Kearney, who led the team with 32 goals this season, scored Grassfield's only goal. This was a goal that equalized midway through the second quarter, but the Northern Virginian was in Four goals were scored in the second half.

"I don't want to say that it was unexpected (this season) because we always had high expectations, but it was a surprise," Grassfield coach Kevin Ellis said. "We didn't play the toughest match at the beginning, but we did a good job, and then in the end, we started to participate in more matches but didn't get some results. But in the end, the regional championships came together and we played very well. Good, and obviously played well at Colgan that night, so in general, it was a good season."

Emily Stafford leads York City with a pair of goals (21-1), Olivia Stafford, Olivia Morgan, Caroline Brickley, Olivia Nelson and Sydney Polly also scored.

Glassfield (14-4) appeared in the state semifinals for the first time, and Ellis hopes this achievement can be a source of inspiration for the Grizzlies' future team.

"As we get closer and closer to these games, we keep telling the girls,'Just set the highest possible standard for future generations, because there is only one first,'" Ellis said. "Now, they are the first team to reach the semifinals. The only thing people can do now is to reach the finals."

Cortland scored three goals in the second half and took a 2-0 lead at halftime, ending the Hawks' season. Jamestown participated in the state championship for the first time since 2008.

Aubrey Steckline's goal gave Great Bridge a 1-0 lead at halftime, and the Wildcats persisted. They will face Cortland in their hometown for the title at noon on Saturday.

The Tigers scored three second-half goals in Massaponaques to secure their place in Saturday's championship game.

The Islanders defeated their opponents from Fredericksburg at Massaponex High School. JM's Yellow Jackets defeated the Islanders in the 2018 and 19 state championship games.

Poquoson advances to the final against Taboo (21-0) at Cortland High School at 10 am on Saturday to ensure that the state champion will return to the Bay River.

Poquoson defeated Tabb 2-1 in what is officially regarded as the 2020 State Championship in April-the fall season was postponed due to COVID-19. But Tarbe won 3-2 in two games in the fall, one in the regular season and the other in the A-zone championship.

Avery Jackson scored for Pokusen in the first quarter, but James Monroe hit back and tied the score at halftime. Emily Swartzbaugh's goal in the third quarter and Sydney Baggett's goal in the fourth quarter gave the Islanders a victory.

"I am very excited and proud of the girls' victory and another opportunity," Poquoson coach Darcey Chiappazzi said of reaching the state finals. "I hope we can pass another one."
