Hutchinson celebrates its 150th anniversary with mile-long block party

As Hutchinson turns 150 this year, the Reno County Museum, the City of Hutchinson, Hutch Rec and the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce partnered to create a community spirit block party on Thursday, Aug. 18.

The mile-long celebration on Main Street will include 12 block parties with Hutchinson-area organizations acting as block captains for free activities, photo opportunities and interactive exhibits.

To begin the celebration, residents can participate in a 150th Historical Photo Event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at East Sherman Street and Main Street.

The celebration will span from Avenue C to 9th Avenue along Main Street, with parking availabilities on the side streets and behind Main Street's buildings. Main Street will be closed from about 5 to 9 p.m.

Three days prior, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, the time capsule buried on Oct. 8, 1972, in front of City Hall will be exhumed and replaced with a new capsule to be opened in 50 years.

At 1 S. Main Street's block party, the sole sponsor, the City of Hutchinson, will host a touch-a-truck event with Hutchinson fire and police departments, alongside Hutchinson Public Works.

The Hutchinson Zoo will also be at 1 S. Main Street's block party.

The Salvation Army, Mitch Rice injury attorney, Holly's Sweet Treats, Rotary, The Burt, Westlake and Evolution Salon will sponsor the Avenue C and B blocks.

Maj. Paul James from the Salvation Army and Caressa Runyon from Mitch Rice Injury Law will act as block captains.

From water games to a picture booth, the Avenue C and B block party will offer free food, a watermelon feed and Around the World with Rotary, where five booths will feature customs from several countries.

The watermelon feed will also offer shaved ice, and the food provided includes hotdogs, water, cupcakes and ice cream.

A dunk tank and two inflatable water slides will be available on the block.

Toy Depot, Board and Brush, Simmons Bank, Achor Inn, Pizaccos, Kiwanis of Downtown Hutchinson and the American Legion will sponsor a party at the next block.

Block captains Mark Buckley and Hutchinson's Antique District will help facilitate six children-friendly games, an outdoor dinner with Anchor Inn and Pizaccos, live music, giveaways and chalk painting.

This block party will be sponsored by Sleep Shoppe and Furniture Gallery, First National Bank of Hutchinson, Rise Up Reno, Reno County Health Department, The Guy Named Kass, Park Place Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, KWCH 12 and Metro to Go.

At the party, block captains Kevin Rule from Sleep Shoppe and Furniture Gallery and Jasmine Hurlbut from First National Bank will lead multiple lawn games, a cash and coupon machine, a mobile weather lab from KWCH 12, and a Sandhills Brewing beer garden.

On this block, the Wiley District will sponsor the party filled with community painting, cotton candy, inflatables and a dance party. 

Block captain Janice Richardson, owner of Splinters N Rust, will host the community painting event.

Block sponsors Milestone Clubhouse, First Southern Baptist Church, Hope Church, Snoko Shaved Ice and the Hutchinson YMCA will host adult and children's games.

There will be a Zumba Workout by the YMCA at the party alongside popcorn and shaved ice.

For the 300 N. Main Street block party, the block sponsors include Family Community Theatre, Daylight Donuts, Reno Co. Headstart, Riverside Baptist Church, Summit Surgical LLC, Sumit Surgical Breakthrough and Grand Central Station Train Club.

There, block captains Mary Kay Dechant and Erika Gordon will facilitate a meet and greet with Family Community Theatre actors, a car show and children's games.

Also, throughout the evening, b. Epic Events will DJ; Chunky Chets cookie truck will be available alongside Smash and Stuff food truck.

For the 400 N. Main Street block party, there will be live music by HWY-14, a local South Central Kansas band performing country and 90's rock.

Block sponsors Lit Studio Paint, and Pottery, Hutch in Harmony, Heartland Credit Union, Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System and Pizza Ranch will also host food options like barbecue, cotton candy, Heartland Credit Union's Treat Trike and a slice of free pizza from Pizza Ranch for the first 240 visitors.

On the same block, there will also be corn hole, a photo booth, historical reenactors, a vintage car show and sidewalk chalk.

This block's sponsors include Reno County Museum, Salt City Brewing, Ad Astra Radio, Granny's Sweet Treat, Pretty Prairie Rodeo, Highlands, the cities of Haven, South Hutchinson and Nickerson and Strataca.

The Reno County Museum will sell 150th Commemorative Items like t-shirts and historical books there.

Also, Hedrick's Petting Zoo from Nickerson will host an Exotic Petting Zoo at this block. At the same time, Ad Astra Radio broadcasts live, and children and individuals can play on a putting green, inflatable bouncy house and a dunk tank.

For 600 N. Main Street, block sponsors the Cosmosphere, Bogey's, Harley's Bicycle, Reno County Government, Don's Floral, Reger Rentals and Don Tolar will host multiple activities.

These activities include a block-long solar system display, Bogey's handmade shakes, Dunk a Reno County Official, touch-a-truck, a bike race with prizes, and two large tent activities hosted by the Reno County Government.

The Reno County Democrats, New Covenant Church, American Legion, Kanza Bank, Journey Mennonite Church, Salt City Pickleballerz and ONEOK will sponsor lawn games, a pickleball game and handouts from the American Legion.

Free hotdogs and treats will also be available.

At 800 N. Main Street's block party, the sponsors include First Baptist Church, The Big Table, New Beginnings, StartUp Hutch, J.P. Wiegand, First Church of God, Trail Life Troop, Eagle Media, Elliot Mortuary, Prairie Star Health Center and St. Teresa's.

The Creekside, College Grove and Grace Arbor Neighborhoods will also sponsor an antique horse and coach ride, cookie decorating, root beer floats, popcorn, a lemonade stand and a photo booth.

Block sponsors Dillons, United Way of Reno County, Reno County Food Policy Board, Peoples Bank and Trust, SoulWinners Mission Church, Midwest Superstore, Clayworks and the Hutchinson Public Library plan to include inflatables, a concert and a reading booth.

A photo booth, cotton candy, a canvas art project and a read-a-loud with the Hutchinson mayor will also be available.
