A curious child had to be rescued by firefighters after getting trapped inside a skill tester machine trying to retrieve a prize.

The little boy climbed inside at Sugarworld Shopping Centre in Cairns on Sunday afternoon to remove the two-year-old boy from the claw machine.

The boy was extricated from the perspex box without injury and returned back to his parents.

Firefighters told the Cairns Post the boy was believed to have climbed into the machine through an opening where the toys are distributed.

However, this is not the first time a small child has managed to climb inside a skill tester.

In 2016, a boy was freed from a vending machine at a unit complex on Lonsdale Street in the Melbourne CBD after spending six hours trapped inside.

The four-year-old boy had managed to get his arm stuck in the machine.

A year earlier, a child was rescued after getting stuck inside a game machine at the Mt Sheridan Plaza in Cairns.

On the hunt for a plush toy, the young boy decided to cut straight to the chase and crawl into the prize dispenser of the game machine.

Along with the boy's shocked parents, onlookers tried to calm the panicking boy as he realised he was stuck in the game, the Cairns Post reported.

Centre security and an off-duty centre management maintenance worker managed to free the boy through the machine’s glass doors.
