10 Worst Video Games Of All Time, According To Metacritic

Players can use Metacritic to find the worst video games out there, which usually boast poor graphics, a thin storyline, or plenty of glitches.

If movie buffs turn to IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes for recommendations and the reliable aggregation of reviews, gamers look to Metacritic. Gamers often go to Metacritic to find the top-rated video games of the moment or history, but the site can also be used to find the worst the industry has to offer.

The worst Metacritic games are simply disappointing or of poor quality. From gameplay to writing to everything in between, these games were so poorly-received that the often-divided critics and users agreed that these games are better buried.

Thanks to Left 4 Dead's massive success and Resident Evil's revival, the 2010s were swamped with zombie games that varied greatly in quality. One of the worst zombie shooters to come out was Infestation: Survivor Stories, which was previously known as The War Z. To wit, Infestation only got a 20 on Metacritic.

Reviews pointed out Infestation's buggy release state and broken mechanics, although they acknowledged that some of these were fixed by updates. However, these updates couldn't address Infestation's biggest problems like mediocre gameplay and a lack of innovation, which didn't help it stand out in an oversaturated genre.

Licensed games based on movies and TV shows don't have the best reputation among gamers, but it's even worse for games based on game shows. Game shows aren't always loved to begin with, and their official games are often dismissed as mindless cashgrabs. Take Deal or No Deal and its 20 Metacritic score, for example.

Deal or No Deal's biggest problem wasn't that it was based on a game show, but that the TV show's core gimmick could only be translated into a minigame on the DS. Worse, Deal or No Deal's gameplay loop ended up repeating the same minigame with a few innovations. Needless to say, critics and users weren't impressed.

After starting out as one of the premier survival-horror titles in 1992, the Alone in the Dark series wallowed in obscurity thanks to games that didn't improve with each passing entry. Illumination is the series' latest entry, and it may be the last.

Illumination only scored 19 on Metacritic, with most reviewers declaring it to be the series' worst installment. The best that critics and users had to offer was that Illumination had an interesting gimmick in its flashlight mechanic, but this couldn't salvage the nigh-unplayable game from its bad enemy AI, poor graphics, and thin story.

Racing games that are essentially Mario Kart bootlegs are fairly common, but few are as universally panned as SPOGS Racing. However, what makes SPOGS Racing notable isn't just its low 18 Metacritic score, but how out of time it seems. In brief, SPOGS Racing is a game about racing pogs released in 2008, not the '90s.

Beyond the SPOGS' (Sports Player Object Gyros) odd novelty, critics and users had nothing else to say about SPOGS Racing. The gameplay was rather generic, the controls and graphics were poor, and it was one of the worst Wii titles ever sold. SPOGS Racing's best user reviews either came from bots or sarcastic users.

The thing about Double Dragon is that it owes its longevity to nostalgia. The problem was that these beat 'em up games could never surpass the original arcade games, leaving the franchise stuck in time. Case in point, Wander of the Dragons was a remake of Double Dragon II: The Revenge, and it wasn't successful.

Wander of the Dragons scored 17 on Metacritic, with most reviews pointing out how uninspired it was. Not helping matters was its seemingly unfinished state, as seen in bugs and glitches. While some people enjoyed Wander of the Dragons, they were nostalgic Double Dragon fans, but even their praises felt faint.

In 2017, the Nintendo Switch's games store began highlighting and selling aspiring indie titles. One of the first games to be featured in this spotlight was Vroom In The Night Sky, a simple game where players helped Magical Girl Luna ride across the realm. It's also worth noting that Vroom is one of the worst-reviewed Switch games of all time.

Vroom was criticized for its repetitive gameplay loop, lack of imagination, and rushed development. Many even questioned how it was allowed to be one of Nindie Spotlight's flagship titles. Vroom scored 17 on Metacritic, and its three perfect user reviews were jokes that "praised" its terrible quality and odd use of the onomatopoeia "vroom."

The Leisure Suit Larry games weren't well-received. The best that these adult-oriented games ever achieved in terms of reception was a small but dedicated fanbase, but even that is partially steeped in ironic appreciation. Even by Leisure Suit Larry's standards, Box Office Bust wasn't successful.

Earning a 17 on Metacritic, Box Office Bust was declared to be the worst Leisure Suit Larry title yet. Reviews trashed the uninspired gameplay and sense of humor. Although critics gave Box Office Bust double-digit scores (the highest being 40 out of 100), the highest user score was 4 out of 100.

Licensed tie-in games that prioritize product placement over gameplay aren't anything new. That being said, Yaris stands out as one of the all-time worst games of its kind. Not only is it just a blatant vanity project for the Toyota Yaris, but it also only managed to score 17 on Metacritic.

Besides Toyota's shameless advertising, reviews bashed Yaris for its unimaginative levels and controls that were very unresponsive. The best thing anyone had to say about Yaris was that it was free on Xbox Live Arcade, although many still felt that they were ripped off even if they didn't pay for the game.

A lot has been said about how Ride To Hell: Retribution is one of the worst games. With a Metacritic score of 16, it's hard to disagree. Ride To Hell didn't manage the things it set out to do, whether it was being an action-packed grindhouse experience or a well-functioning game.

Critics and users commented on Ride To Hell's terrible controls, poor graphics, and immaturity. The two perfect user reviews it got weren't even serious. Ride To Hell's console versions scored three more points than the PC port, which is Metacritic's second-worst game.

Like its predecessor, the Wii, the Wii U was meant for party games. Ideally, this would mean that its exclusive party games were accessible and fun for people of all ages. The Wii U exclusive Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade promised that in both its title and advertisements, only for the opposite to be true.

Scoring just 11, Family Party was criticized for prioritizing quantity over quality and its uninspired minigames. Almost every review implied that giving Family Party to children was pointless because it's almost unplayable, while its three perfect scores came from sarcastic testimonials or insincere sycophantic praise.
