Classic edutainment game Putt-Putt Travels Through Time will soon be coming to the Nintendo Switch eShop. The point and click adventure has been available on iOS and PC for the last few years, but this will be its console debut.

Originally released in 1997 for Windows and Mac operating systems, Putt-Putt Travels Through Time is actually the third entry in the Putt-Putt series. Similar to the Cars movies, it takes place in a world where anthroponomic vehicles stand-in for human beings (although there is disconcerting evidence that people once inhabited the world, raising worrying questions about what happened to them).

Putt-Putt himself is a purple convertible who, like all good children's characters, manages to find himself in the strangest of situations. Across his eight video game outings and seven picture books, he has journeyed to the moon, been recruited into the circus, taken a road trip and embarked on a Christmas adventure. To play through the full catalog of Putt-Putt releases, you will need to head over to Steam where they are sold individually or as part of a complete bundle.

If you would prefer to relive your childhood memories on the move, or to give your own kids a more accessible edutainment experience, then the upcoming Nintendo Switch port of Putt-Putt Travels Through Time might be a superior option.

In this threequel, Putt-Putt and his reliable canine friend Pep get sucked through a portal and must travel across different eras of history in an attempt to get home. Along the way, they get to meet dinosaurs, prospectors from the old west, figures from Arthurian legend and even people from the future.

From a gameplay perspective, players will have to use point and click mechanics to crack various puzzles and engage in a few minigames. Depending on how quickly you and your child can solve these problems, the breezy experience will last for a couple of hours (which is par for the course when it comes to edutainment titles like this).

For the nostalgic PC experience of playing Putt-Putt Travels Through Time, you can get the PC version right now on Steam. Given that it's just a point and click title with hand-drawn animation from the 1990s (and therefore isn't too demanding with its system requirements), you can play it on pretty much any contemporary laptop or desktop machine.

Meanwhile, to get the Nintendo Switch port, you will have to wait until its release date of Monday, January 3 in 2022. In terms of file size, the eShop download will take up a minuscule 311MB.

Putt-Putt Travels Through Time will normally cost $14.99 on the Nintendo Switch but is currently reduced to $11.99 if you want to pre-order it. This discounted price will be offered until Monday, January 10. It's only available digitally on the eShop, so you won't be able to order a physical copy.

Elsewhere, another release from developer Humongous Games (who specialize in these kinds of educational experiences for children) is coming to the handheld device in 2022. Freddi Fish 3: The Case of the Stolen Conch Shell will be released on the exact same day with the exact same pricing.
